Welcome to the Learning Assistance Center (LAC) at Mt. San Antonio College. The LAC is a well-equipped, professionally staffed facility that offers students a personal approach to academic success through courses with a basis in developmental education, current technology, and tutorial services. The department develops partnerships with other faculty on campus creating learning communities.

The LAC offers a comprehensive list of developmental classes that begin with the pre-collegiate level in reading, writing, math, and study techniques courses to the California State University transfer level in our Critical Reading and Advanced Study Techniques courses. A personalized self-study course is also available for students and community members. On-line study strategy modules are also available.

Welcome

In addition to departmental courses, the LAC houses Tutorial Services. The current program encompasses a combination of individual and small group tutoring as drop-in sessions, computer-based tutorials, and on-going study groups. With support of the campus faculty, Tutorial Services coordinates a Supplemental Instruction program with tutors in the classroom for over 39 classes. The ultimate goal is to help struggling students develop necessary skills to succeed in their courses without sacrificing academic standards.

The Learning Lab, our computer center, is a welcome new addition to the LAC. It offers an opportunity for faculty to have their course-related software available to their students on either a Mac or PC computer. The Lab is available to all students.

We look forward to having you come to our Learning Assistance Center and helping you achieve success.

Department Philosophy
As research-based developmental educators, we recognize and value that all learners have their own pathways as well as obstacles to learning. Although we believe students need to assume responsibility for their own learning, we also believe that students learn best in a positive learning environment that includes social interaction. We provide scaffolding through the support structures—the integration of technology, the access to useful resources and professional educators—that help students develop cognitive, metacognitive, and affective strategies.
